Justo Guillemette discovered a clear path forward through dedication, discipline and an interest in service. His hard work has paid off in a big way—earning him a very high score on the ASVAB (standardized test used by the U.S. military), a spot in the Navy’s Nuclear Power program, and a sign-on bonus.
Through Stadium High School’s NJROTC program, Justo developed the skills and mindset needed to succeed in one of the Navy’s most academically demanding fields. Now, as he prepares for boot camp and a future working aboard submarines, he’s proud of how far he’s come and excited for what’s ahead.
This is what Justo had to say about his experience:

Earlier this school year, Justo received a ceremonial big check for committing to the U.S Navy's Nuclear Power program.
What’s an accomplishment you’re proud of?
I got a high score on the ASVAB and because of that I was able to get into the Navy’s Nuclear Power program. I got a score of 90, and the highest possible score is 99. The Navy gave me a sign-on bonus for joining the nuclear field. I studied really hard for the test and now I’m going to be able to work in the nuclear field on submarines during my deployment.
What are your plans for next year?
In August I’m going to boot camp and after that to South Carolina to start the first part of my schooling, which will be mostly physics and calculus and then the electronics and mechanics part of the program. Once I finish that, I’ll get to do hands-on learning with real nuclear reactors before my deployment.
How has your school experience helped prepare you for that pathway?
The career I chose is very academically demanding. A lot of my teachers here at Stadium have helped me become a better learner and develop study skills. The school routine is similar to the Navy. You have to wake up every day to be there at a certain time, finish your work and then head home.
I learned a lot about the Navy through the NJROTC program, and that is really where my interest in joining the Navy started. Being in NJROTC has given me a head start in my career with the Navy.
Where have you shown the most grit in your high school career?
My junior year I was taking two college-level courses, and it was hard to get through. But I was able to pass those classes and move on.
What are you looking forward to next year?
I’m just looking forward to finishing my school and then being able to work on submarines. I’m setting myself up for the future because I’m going to have free tuition after I’m done with the Navy. I’d like to go to college in the future and maybe study biology, but I’m not sure yet.
Describe yourself in three words.
Kind, hardworking and smart.
