Tacoma Public Schools continues to lead the way in girls’ flag football across Washington, with league championships, undefeated seasons and top RPI rankings highlighting a historic year.
This season carries added significance as it marks the first year girls’ flag football is recognized as an official interscholastic sport by the Washington Interscholastic Activities Association.
TPS played a meaningful role in advancing the sport, helping to grow participation, establish competitive structures and demonstrate that girls’ flag football belongs alongside the state’s traditional athletic offerings. The success seen this season reflects years of intentional planning and leadership coming to fruition.
At the 4A level, Stadium High School has had a perfect season, finishing undefeated at 13-0 and earning North Puget Sound League 4A championship. The WIAA RPI rankings show Stadium in the top spot among all 4A girls’ flag football programs statewide. Stadium carries this momentum into the West Central District III (WCD3) 4A Tournament, which will be held at French Field in Kent on Friday and Saturday, Jan. 30 and 31.
In the 3A classification, Lincoln High School defeated Silas High School and Mount Tahoma High School in the Pierce Puget Sound League Tournament to capture the league championship. Lincoln is now ranked third in the WIAA RPI. Joining Lincoln in the WCD3 tournament are Mount Tahoma and Silas High School, who also posted competitive regular seasons and remain among the strongest 3A programs in Washington.
The West Central District 3A Tournament will be hosted at Mount Tahoma on Friday and Saturday, Jan. 30 and 31, providing Tacoma student-athletes the opportunity to compete for advancement into the WIAA state championships on their home turf.
In the first official season of WIAA-sanctioned girls’ flag football, Tacoma teams are not only participating - they are setting the competitive standard. TPS is proud to continue shaping the future of girls’ flag football through leadership, competitive success and student achievement.
