Students at Stadium High School are turning classroom learning into a real-world experience with the opening of “The Thrifty Tiger”, a student-run thrift store created through the school’s Business pathway.
The store officially opened to the school community on Wednesday, April 15, offering secondhand clothing curated and prepared entirely by students. The project blends entrepreneurship and sustainability, giving students hands-on experience in running a business.
A student-led vision takes shape
CTE Business and Marketing teacher Molly Pollock said bringing a “student-led enterprise” back to Stadium was part of the long-term vision when she joined the school.
Through classroom discussions, Pollock discovered that many students shared her passion for the environment and second-hand clothing. That shared interest led to the creation of The Thrifty Tiger.
“The idea for The Thrifty Tiger came from that passion, providing an opportunity for students to showcase a combination of their style, consciousness of sustainable clothing, and business knowledge,” Pollock said. “We hope that the store will represent the idea of being a conscious consumer, that thrifting can be fun, affordable, and stylish!”
Students took on leadership roles across all aspects of the store, from branding and business planning to inventory, pricing and social media. They are organized into four departments — management, store operations, merchandise and social media — giving each student a role in bringing the store to life.
Growing impact beyond the classroom
Pollock said seeing students’ ideas turn into something tangible has been one of the most rewarding parts of the project.
“It has made me so proud seeing the students work together and share their ideas in making the store successful,” she said. “Students have really stepped into positions of decision making, problem solving, and leadership. They are truly thriving and it is the coolest thing to witness every day. They are proud of the work they have put in, and that pride is so well deserved.”
Looking ahead, Pollock hopes The Thrifty Tiger will continue to grow its impact within the school community. Long-term she envisions the store offering formal wear for events like homecoming and prom, providing clothing for job interviews, creating Stadium-specific merchandise designed by students and more.
“I see The Thrifty Tiger growing,” Pollock said. “Working with local organizations, having stalls at farmers markets and community events and hopefully being able to give back in meaningful ways.”
